DISCURSIVE READER

The DISCURSIVE READER (DR) is an attempt to compile and centralize published research resources (books, theses, articles, conference papers, reports, and websites/blogs) about urbanism and urbanization in the Lebanon. The DFR covers related disciplines of anthropology, architecture, art, cultural geography, economics, engineering, landscape, real-estate, regional planning, sociology, urban design, and urbanism. The DFR presents researchers with resources that are mainly available online or in main, accessible resource centers, like universities and government bodies.

PULSE

PULSE is Professionals of Urbanism, Landscape, and Spatial Environments in the Lebanon and the region.

The PULSE Google Group is the successor of the Urbanitopia Yahoo Group, which has been operational since mid 2005. The idea behind PULSE is to connect professionals of spatial environments [urban planners, urban designers, landscape designers, architects, social scientists, and policy makers] in the Lebanon and the region and to promote communication and exchange among them for bettering spatial awareness and advancing the profession of spatial environments in the region.

PULSE is a closed group, open to members only by invitation. Members can post announcements [book releases, lectures, conferences, etc.], job vacancies [practice, research], readings [articles, books, electronic sources, etc.], funding opportunities [fellowships, scholarships, etc.], and ideas related to the disciplines and practice concerned with spatial environments.

At the Edge of the City

At the Edge of the City is a contemporary critique of urban governance and spatial production in Beirut. The undertaking is advocating in scope, multidisciplinary in approach, and journalistic in style. The book is an edited volume on public space in Beirut, focused on the case of Beirut’s park Horsh Al-Sanawbar, hosting the original textual and visual works of over 25 scholars, professionals, journalists, activists, and artists. The book is supported by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung (Middle East Office) and published by the DISCURSIVE FORMATIONS initiative. The 192-page volume (B&W + color) is rich in research, essays, photographs (historical, contemporary, and aerial), information graphics, and art work. Also, the book includes a poster (by Danny Khoury) and a documentary DVD (by Lasse Lau).
